In u. s. today, 6. 4 million households are food insecure. Food insecure = not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Worldwide, more than 1 billion people suffer from chronic food insufficiency, hunger and malnutrition. Many nations face a food crisis, a steep decline in food availability. Need to increase access to nutritious food. Have several threats to our food supply (mostly from the environment) Produce enough food without destroying natural resources needed to produce it. Ensure people have access to nutritious food. Every year, earth gains 79 million new residents to feed, many in impoverished nations. By 2050, 1 billion additional tons of grains will be needed to feed the world"s population. Loss of food-producing land: becoming saltier (due to irrigation); eroding; being paved over. Accelerating fossil fuel use (coal, gas) pollution. Increasing levels of heat-trapping carbon dioxide causes severe weather. Radiation increases earth"s temperature; polar ice caps melting, which threatens coastlines.
