Document Summary

Courts of great britain are not a completely unified judicial system; 3 different judicial systems: england & wales, scotland, northern ireland. House of lords used to be the final appeals court, now the final appeals court is the supreme court: composed of president, deputy president, and 10 justices of the court. Like all british judges, these justices are obliged to retire at age 70 if they were first appointed to a judicial office after the 31st of march 1995. If before, then you can retire at age 75: 2 primary ways to leave the court: death or retirement. Rarely, they can be impeached: currently, supreme court is in the news-- today began the appeal of brexit for the first time, supreme court established in 2009. Until 1399, both houses of parliament heard petitions for the judgements of lower courts to be reversed. Law lords could vote on legislation, but rarely did so.
