French history can be divided into two distinct periods, before and after the french revolution of. Since the revolution, france has had thirteen different constitutions and five republics. There have been calls for a sixth republic. The constitutions have radically organized the french political system for just over two centuries. Compared to us and gb, which have had one constitutional system during the same time frame, the french system can be described as unstable. Third republic 1870-1940 is the most stable and longest constitutional period so far. The fifth republic, according to robert elgie, has provided considerable institutional stability and it will probably prove to resist the calls for fundamental change at least for the foreseeable future. Modern day french political system is usually considered to have begun in 1870 with the surrender of louis napoleon in the franco-prussian war. Represented the end of the second empire and of bonapartist politics.
