Document Summary

Thrasymachus says justice is the advantage of the stronger: why won"t you praise me but you won"t be willing. Thrasymachus says justice is what those in power say it is (determined by the leaders) Democracy is just as an injustice as any other society: ruled by the majority, everything is justified under this style of regime. Socrates says people make mistakes, even those in power. Thrasymachus says rulers never make mistakes, only doing what"s good for yourself: doesn"t consult what is good for the common good in this situation (ruling art) If he makes a mistake, he wasn"t actually practicing the ruling art. The second objection socrates is that every art rules over something that it benefits but not the practitioners themselves: medicine helps the patient and not the doctor, arts are about benefiting someone other than the practitioner. Insults socrates saying he needs someone to wipe his nose for him.
