Comparison of Mitosis and Meiosis:
Mitosis: responsible for growth and repair as well as di;eren$a$on
of cells

Comparison of Mitosis & Meiosis
Mitosis:
Occurs in soma$c (diploid) cells
Produces gene$cally iden$cal cells for growth, di;eren$a$on and
repair
A line of soma$c cells may divide many $mes
Results in two diploid soma$c cells iden$cal to parent cell
Meiosis:
Occurs in germ-line (diploid) cells
Produces sex cells with half the chromosome number
Creates genomic diversity
Germ-line cells go through meiosis only once
Results in 4 non-iden$cal, haploid sex cells di;erent to parent cell

Document Summary

Paternal and maternal chromosomes cross over when chromosomes are long. Only occurs when they are in the chromad form and when they are close to each other. Random separaon of homologous chromosome pairs during anaphase 1 of meiosis. Maternal and parental chromosomes are independently assorted into resulng gametes. A parcular daughter cell has a 50% chance of ge5ng either the maternal or parental chromosome for each homologous pair. The number of di;erent combinaons of chromosomes in the daughter cells = to 2n (haploid number) Parent germ line cell: contains 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes. More than 8 million gametes can be produced. Ferlisaon begins when the sperm penetrates the egg. Many sperm needed to help one get in the egg. Ends with the producon of a zygote. Mitosis: responsible for growth and repair as well as di;erenaon of cells. Responsible for producon of genec variaon in o;spring.
