SOWK 3110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Capitalism, Pragmatism, Social Inequality
Document Summary
The liberals endorse the private (free) enterprise system, but at the same time they believe that the market needs a degree of government regulation. The primary values of a liberal ideology are: pragmatism, liberty. Pragmatism means that, as a government or an individual, you do what needs to be done. Liberals have often been described as less ideological, which means they are willing to do things that suit the circumstances, but that may not exactly follow liberal principles. With liberalism, there is an acceptance of the basic tenets of conservatism such as liberty, individualism, and social inequality but the inclusion of two other values, pragmatism and humanism, differentiate liberalism. Liberty, individualism, and social inequality are tempered by a bottom line of social justice for the poor. So, competition and markets are tempered by a concept for people and the need for a certain basic level of social security.
