Point of this lecture: not in a cultural void, travelled a lot and interaction with others. Greater emphasis on aggression & defensiveness & state-building. The maya connection in central mexico around 800ad. Two cities that had maya migration and high degree of mayan influence. Tezcatlipoca god of war was believed to be maya origin. Naturalistic body proportion = mayan style compared to teotihuacan style which is blocky and geometric. Paint is made up of vegetable matter. Cacaxtla writing: not maya but a hybrid of teotihuacan. Striking sculpture: temple of the feathered serpent (talud-tablero style = associated with teotihuacan). Attempt to recreate teotihuacan power, but mimics mayan style. Many caves: used normally for storage but one was used as an observatory. Located of present day mexico city puebla. Scholars believed that cholula was taken over by gulf coasts who were descendents from mayan. Founded on a volcanic flow, important trade product.
