Sharma investigates what it means to be canadian". She argues that identifying oneself through reference to the canadian nation" works to secure legitimacy for the subordination of people who are legally and socially made into foreigners" or non-canadians" in. The label of being an other, or not really canadian is easier to justify the subordination of these migrant working peoples. Viewing them as foreigner reduce these individuals as others, that don"t necessarily belong. The foreigners live their experiences that are shaped by a constant denial ofd the social, political and economic rights of citizenship as well as the denial of the legitimacy of making themselves at home. Majority of those from canada, who have the legitimacy of the social and legal status of being canadian", see the foreigners denials as justified.
