Document Summary
What is a family: a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household, how does the family function as a political institution. The family in pre-capitalist societies: no concept of the child as innocent or separate from the adult world, work in the family involved all members of the family unit. Childhood was not seen as a special time when they needed to develop. Capitalism is a new invention in the 17th century because prior to people being forced to abide by feudalism where taxes were paid and necessities were given, wages dictated how one can support themselves and their family. Gender division of labour: productive labour = paid labour masculine, reproductive labour = unpaid labour = feminine sphere of privatized home/family. Unpaid labour: physical: housekeeping, childcare, grocery shopping, etc, household finances, emotional labour: love and care-work.
