Through changes in the economy and movement from simple forms of production (involving basic methods of management supervision) vs systematic management involving more detailed and hierarchical forms of control. Began because larger groups of workers were employed. This was due to the changes in land grant policies and the increase number of immigrants. When independent small land owners were more popular, the employees were a lot closer with their employer. The insufficient demand of employers and the threat that they might start their own farms, meant that the employed were a lot more valuable to the employees. At the same time, the employees also relied on the employer because finding work is difficult.
