We need to problematize the idea of family as natural" and instead examine. Problematize idea that it has always been and looked the same. Affected by class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientations, culture. Reflects ideas at particular time & place. Pay attention to material conditions families exist within: environmental context. Preferd ideal family, prefered gender roles: priviliged, sex/gender (roles for women, men, children, class, race, ethnicity. Idea of motherhood: hegemonic privileged idea, role of religion and the state in determining who constitutes a family. Key institutions religion & state: what is acceptable as a family, who can marry, reproduce, who should be religions change role of religion and state. Nuclear family came because it fit within new kind of economy. Marriage doesnt look at roles of parents or extended family: challenging universalism and transhistoricalism regarding idealized family", roles and functions of the family institution. Reproductive work: having kids, raising them, educating them, reprodcuing future workers, normative ideas.
