Material and ideological as well as a possible alternative: The advancement of technology has made it harder for people to survive within a capitalistic system. Technology has resulted in vast unemployment and a growing class divide between rich and poor. This has made it harder for people to find a place for themselves in a society that is centered on work and money. Since human worth has been defined through productive terms, loss of employment leaves a person without self-definition or societal function. Therefore, it is necessary for people to redefine their identity. However, it is difficult to reclaim our identity since it has been lost in a culture of rationality and information. Information has been defined as the key to life and has been forged as a part of our identity. Just like a computer, we have been programmed to shift our focus from moral visions to more rationalized ones.
