Roszak explains how the idolatry of science has eradicated our visionary imagination and replaced it with an addict"s appetite for logical, artificial stimuli (1973). We are drowning in a sea of information unable to see the beauty that lies above the surface. Our infatuation with the material world has resulted in an alienation from life and our very selves. This is because we live in a society where we are conditioned to disregard our unconscious selves in favor of a fast paced and materialistic lifestyle. In an era of hyperrealism, we strive to eliminate all aspects that are part of the visionary realm. We disregard our dreams, numb our senses and devalue the importance of introspection. These visceral aspects serve no purpose in our rationalized world. The pursuit for dollar-and-cents realism has not only taken away the value from life and experiential knowledge but has made us strangers to our own experiences (roszak, 1973).
