SOSC 1140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 38: Protestant Work Ethic, Economic Rationalism, Economic System
Document Summary
Rationalization of mindset and the protestant work ethic. Economic systems are created by a set of ideologies. Weber describes how the transformation of ideologies is marked by the shift from economic tradition to economic rationalism. During an era that was focused on economic traditionalism, people would only work as much as was needed to survive and provide for one"s family. Once workers had the bare necessities for survival, priority was given to more important things like family and leisure time. Economic traditionalism eventually evolved into economic rationality which was the idea of applying science, reason and common sense to work life and production processes. This resulted in transforming ideological and intangible values of family commitment, moral obligations and civic duty into something that was much more material. This economic rationalism has been adopted as the worldview of people in market society and is one of the main contributors towards modern capitalism.
