SOSC 1140 Lecture Notes - Lecture 37: Scientific Management, Deskilling
Document Summary
The act of deskilling is one of the main factors supporting fordism. Fordism was a new strategy implemented in the factory in order to secure mass production and cheapen labour, using machines to facilitate this. Having machines meant that jobs could be done by less-skilled and easily replaceable workers. This also put an end to the human creativity required for certain trades, as operating machines required fewer skills and less thinking. As rinehart points out, the new work system left people psychologically estranged from their work. another strategy the was integrated into the workplace was taylors theory of scientific management which further robbed workers of control of their labor. This strategy required workers to do the most work in the quickest amount of time. This resulted in labour being time-oriented rather than task-oriented. Taylor"s theory emphasized efficiency by focusing entirely on monetary benefits and increasing employee productivity.
