From the beginning, the greatest challenge faced by mankind was survival. The term survival of the fittest is a familiar saying and implies that only the strongest survive. In earlier times, this means of survival relied on necessities such as food and shelter. However, survival of the fittest was too big a task to be accomplished by just one. Communities would help one another in their daily tasks of living and staying alive. In modern society, this survival has a quite different meaning. Survival of the fittest is survival of an individual on his own, and one who can flourish the most in the financial and material realm. This change relies mainly on a shift from and economic market to a market society, a term which polanyi has dubbed as. The great transformation. this transformation not only created striking changes in the ways people worked but also the ways in which society operates as a whole.
