Emigraion and the formaion of a labour diaspora 1890 1911. At the same ime they rarely migrate as isolated units. Larger social pressures that impinge on groups of people, so there are common narraives and recurring paterns in most cases: chapter poses two main quesions about iniial creaion of ukrainian diaspora in n- First wave of emigrants consituted a classic labor diaspora in that they were trying to escape poor economic condiions and were in search of wage labor/opportuniies for farming. Emigrants who moved within russian empire propelled by economic condiions and part of larger russian plan for colonizaion of north and far east. Before 1917, present day ukraine split between austro-hungarian empire and russia: certain connecion of ethnicity and social class in these two empires. In both cases, majority of ukrainians were peasants. Some were in higher classes, but very few. Gave serfs freedom to live, work marry.
