Document Summary

The myth of consumerism : being a consumer is a sense of self-worth. This is articulated in the relationship btwn citizenship and consumerism: since consumption is the norm, it doesn"t address all systems of inequality and the kinds of implicit judgement. Identifying poor consumers: suppliers have to choose carefully where to place their product (location, and types of market places) because they need to be aware of their brand identity. The politician believes that everybody has a choice to be either poor or rich, and that those who are poor, just made the wrong choices. Doesn"t take into account of systemic discrimination: bad choices being made", people feel entitled to comment on what p. p are using their food stamps on. Judging p. p. moral character and separating us from them: lacking richness of spirit, wealth = virtue. If a person is wealthy, that means that they"re associated w/ the right people, making good choices.
