SOSC 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Robert Heilbroner, Bourgeoisie
Document Summary
Capitalist societies cause change while traditional societies stay away from change. Capitalism is an economic and political system, which is a country"s trade. Heilbroner says, country"s distribution and mobilization work forces are controlled by individuals for profit. modernity is driven by our imagination whereas tradition is driven by the need to do the right thing for the people. Part of tradition is lost in this modernity society as most of us do what we please and we do not pay too much attention to our tradition. Modern society emphasizes more on production rather than survival: differentiate between capitalism and wealth. Wealth is a symbol of power and prestige. Accumulates and adds up to the person who owns it. Wealth allows for the right to deny access to the means of production. The creation of bourgeoisie came with new social orders; with money minded values and it has spread a new economic life.
