Sosc 1000 lecture work and class: education, living standards, health, democratic, time use. Problem with gdp is that it leaves out half the population of the planet (mostly women) and the planet/nature itself. Economists are unhappy when they have to examine variables that not easily measured by something like a price ernest shvsky. Before world war ii only rich families had access to university since it was expensive. After wwii children of middle will have access to university because of government student loans. Altering the position of matter: tend to be unpleasant, poorly paid, tends to be dangerous. Telling other to do stuff: pleasant, well paid, safe. Work is an activity requiring the worker to give up this tranquility of his freedom and his happiness in order to live. Work is the continuous employment in the production of goods and services for pay. Any activity that installs the goods and services of others.
