Work is fundamental to who we are and our place in the world. Work has a profound impact on those who work. 2 types of work by russell: altering the position of matter? (tends to be unpleasant, poorly behaved and dangerous, telling others to do stuff (tends to be pleasant, well paid and safe) Wealth of nation: activity requiring the worker to give up on his tranquility, freedom and dangerous. Work becomes instrumental and life begins when work ends. Employment, unemployment and underemployment (main st. to bay st. ): Unemployment contributes to the feeling of worthlessness, work is central to who and what we are. Living on main st. means they are making their life on minimum wage. Bay st. is purchasing power, selling power. In 1990, ipt (involuntary part time employment) was created. There is no union member among the highest paid occupations in canada 2014.
