Document Summary

The 9 major occupations for women, all of which are related to women"s roles. The association between unpaid domestic work and women"s labour resulted in the characterizing of women"s work as unproductive. Men"s labour was divorced from, at least to an extent, unpaid labour that was done in the home. Like manufacturing, including shoemaking, was an important source of labour for women. Women constituted 42% of light manufacturing workforce in montreal and 34% in toronto. Women in this trade (needle-making) were highly skilled, but were usually employed by master craftsmen who were male. Their high level of skills weren"t recognized as male"s level of skill often were. With the exception of apprentices, men did not work alongside women. Where women did work alongside men was in the cotton industry, but even there, the occupational expectations set by gender was apparent. Employers saw women and children as cheap sources of labour.
