The dissolution or the breaking of a union was infrequent, difficult, and time consuming. We would hear moreso about people leaving their partners and not a recognition of a formal separation. 1968 divorce act: no fault divorce laws were introduced in the 60s and 70s in canada and some areas of the u. s. Made it easier for people to get divorced. The divorce act, however, was more constrained in its structure. There were provisions in place and conditionalities attached to it. In 1986, more reasons were available to get a divorce, one of which was marital breakdown. In 1986, canada implemented the divorce act which considered marital breakdown as grounds for divorce. Following a separation and perhaps a legal move for divorce, things are complicated.
