She purports feminism in her convictions and actions. We also see a distinctly feminist orientation in the family. There is a blurring of roles in the family: egalitarian in family vs. leave it to beaver: authority lied solely in the husband. Jay, gloria and manny: they fall into what sociologists of family categorize as inter-racial coupling. They still represent notions of the nuclear family. They represent a blended family as well, as manny is not the biological son of jay. The definity of the family still holds, but these new shifts occur as well. Lily, cam, and mitch: the original definition of nuclear family is based on heteronormativity, which, thus, excludes this family. They might be excluded from some of the early conceptualizations of the family. We see less rigidity attached to feminine and masculine roles: there is a distinct blurring of our notions of what is masculine and feminine.
