SOCI 3630 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Race Matters, Environmental Determinism, Social Darwinism
Document Summary
Race: a social relational category that may be defined by socially selected physical characteristics . Racialization does exist: process through which we put people into different categories and labels. Racialization: it is the process in which people are viewed and judged essentially different in terms of their intellect, their morality, their values, and their worth because of differences of physical type or cultural heritage. : view groups and entities as fixed, unchanging historically, and thus, remain the same (problematic approach) Ethnicity: defined more in terms of socially selected cultural characteristics. Race is socially constructed because: humans rather than abstract social forces produce races, races are constructed relationally, against one another, rather than in isolation. Defined in terms of fixed bio-genetic attributes, e. g. , biological determinism, eugenics (selective breeding), and social darwinism. Defined in terms of physiological + cultural/linguistic attributes. Defined as a social/political construct with real consequences.
