Document Summary
Gender and power: hegemonic masculinity and exaggerated femininity. Since the beginning of the course we have been examining the various ways in which we can make sense of gender and the multiple ways of theorizing masculinities and femininities. As kimmel argues, we come to measure ourselves in opposition to these others racial minorities, sexual minorities. For men the classic other is of course women. For most meant it is imperative that they make it clear that they are unlike women, are in competition to prove they are men and, as a result, reject all things feminine. These norms of men and masculinity have been socially constructed and how this social construction has provided a very limited script for men to live by in north american society. While acknowledging that there is no one masculinity, authors such as kimmel and kaufman, Connell and others argue that there is a cultural dominant construction of masculinity what they refer to as hegemonic masculinity.
