Life long process of social interaction through which people acquire self-identity and the physical, mental and social skills needed for survival in society. Essential for survival and stability of society; and growth. The kind of person we become is linked. To the time and kind of society we live in plasticity. Harlow studies show tat when young monkeys were deprived of social contact with other monkeys during their irst 6 months of life, they never learned how to relate to others. Mechanism through which you learn the skills, and roles and identity in society: peer groups, family, learning, mass media. Conlict theorist: socialization reproduces class in children from the class of the parents. Socialization contributes to false consciousness- lack of awareness and distorted perceptions of class realist as it afects all aspects of social life. Built due to imperative competition; technological knowledge was needed.
