Document Summary

Chapter 7: social and human services in the community. Poverty: lack of sufficient money to acquire essential things to survive, and a sense of hopelessness and injustice. Poverty affects everyone, but some groups more than others. Blacks, latinos and asians experience higher rates of poverty that white-americans. Social welfare is a response to try and meet the needs of the poor. Serves both ideological (i. e. political and religious) and practical concerns. A common example of social welfare is charity/philanthropy. (consists of a donor and a recipient) Charity is an ideology of the time period. We see that people are more likely to give during seasons of christmas or passover. Public welfare: government (rather than private donors) assume responsibility for the poor or recipients of aid who have not contributed to this particular system of aid. Charity/philanthropy and public welfare are likely to create social stigmas whereby some people have negative views to those who require such aid.
