PSYC 3520 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Primitive Reflexes, Lifesize, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Lecture 5 focuses on ch 6 (development of intelligence) and ch 7 (categorization) Theoretical approaches incl piagetian, nativist, information-processing and psychosomatic. Piagetian approach: proposed a theory of infant cognitive development organized around 4 broad themes: object, space, time and causality. Tried to explain when infants had knowledge about each of these types of themes. Very different than nativist approach (nativist = innate), piaget = experience with environment is required. Infant acting on environ and eventually being able to get info from it. Schemes: a cognitive structure that forms the basis of organizing actions and mental representations so that we can understand and act upon the environment. Initially schemes = sensory-motor, more verbal when older. Can have schemes for different types of things, piaget says schemes are constructed over time. Adaptation = how children handle new information in terms of what they already know.
