Observations of ms b"s and ms o"s class: communication patterns didn"t reflect genuine discourse, students didn"t direct remarks toward each other, students" utterances were new, isolated communications directed at the teacher (self expression discussion, ms b had attention of the children they were focused on winning, ms o"s children had factual knowledge; they said what was prepared to be said but there was no acknowledgement of the claims of others.
