Many educators do not know what is gained from class arguments: argument as a form of inquiry leads to enriching understanding and enhancing knowledge, superiority of collaborative vs. individual problem solving (when we problem solve with each other we can make better and quicker progress than if individually, exposure to other ideas and perspectives, development of own ideas as communicated to others, beneficial even if the listener doesn"t provide any response. Observations of ms b"s and ms o"s class: communication patterns didn"t reflect genuine discourse, students didn"t direct remarks toward each other, students" utterances were new, isolated communications directed at the teacher (self expression discussion, ms b had attention of the children they were focused on winning, ms o"s children had factual knowledge; they said what was prepared to be said but there was no acknowledgement of the claims of others.
