Document Summary
Suspect has the right to remine silence and ask of lawyer during the interrogation. Don"t have to talk without the presence of a lawyer. Sets out 9 steps for securing a confession. Goal: make confession seem preferable to not confessing. Want the suspect to be more afraid than keep things secret, things will go bad if you don"t tell the truth. Nine steps of the reid technique (don"t have to be in order) Reid technique ploys fall into two broad categories: Minimization techniques (the good cop - it"s ok to confess give false sense of security) Designed to lull suspect into false sense of security. Blame victim (the victim is the one who is stupid) Downplay seriousness of offence (you lost control and it happens to everyone) Suggest it is in best interest to confess. Maximization techniques (the bad cop - confess or you will go to jail forever) Place time pressures (limited offer, only today)
