Secondary memory (ltm: the knowledge of a former state of mind after is has already once dropped from consciousness, you still know the information, but it is not in your consciousness. Primary memory (stm: information remaining in consciousness after it has been perceived. Iconic memory: sensory memory for visual info- afterimage . Echoic memory: sensory memory for auditory/verbal info echo . Refers to memory processes that retain info only temporarily, until info is forgotten or becomes incorporated into a more stable, long term store. How is stm tested: span test: max number of sequentially presented items that can be recalled in the correct order. Can be digits, words, syllables, objects, locations: free recall: order does not matter. Other stm tests: verbal memory tests (stories, word pairs, word lists, visual memory tests (immediate recall of complex figure that is difficult to verbalize)
