Encoding: process of acquiring information, filtering and transferring it to memory (different than coding, coding is more of the modality or form/ttype of information getting into memory. ). Retrieval is the process of transferring info from the ltm back into working memory to retrieve the encoded info. Maintenance rehearsal: does not go to ltm. One of the ways info is encoded into memory (repetition), eg repeating a phone # multiple times). Elaborative rehearsal: more likely to go to ltm. Finding ways to relate the info into something meaningful, results in better memory. Levels of processing (lop): theory proposed by craik and lockhart memory depends on the depth of processing. Depth of processing includes shallow, moderate and deep. Shallow processing: little attention to meaning, focuses more on physical features of stimulus (letters, capitals, lowercase, etc). results in less better memory. Deep processing: memories more likely to get into ltm as opposed to shallow memories.
