Ltm & stm interaction: interplay between what is happening in the present and information from the past, is based on the distinction between stm/wm and ltm. Hippocampus: bilateral (both sides of brain) structure. Impacts the salience of memory, making it meaningful. Neuropsychological studies: reflect how stm and ltm used separately. Molaison (h. m. ), clive wearing, k. f: henry molaison (h. m. ): Experimental procedure to eliminate seizures by removing hippocampus. No more new ltm memorize but only stm. His case led to understanding the role of hippocampus and forming new long-term memories. Because stm was still intact, this showed that they were separate. Case also showed that hippocampus binds info from many sources to form new memories: clive wearing: Musician with encephalitis-destroyed parts of medial temporal lobe (hippocampus, amygdala)
