Document Summary
Categorization: process by which things are placed into groups. Help us understand individual cases not previously encountered: see cat bird never before seen-it"s characteristics may associate with mental representations or concepts of birds allowing us to categorize it as bird. Pointers to knowledge -may help us to also understand unique behaviors or items: man with blue face pointed with white leaf. Leaf game is going on, we categorize as maple leaf fan. Identifiy special characteristics: after something has been categorized you can start observing its unique features. 2 approaches to categorization: definitional and prototype: 1) definitional approach: Does not work well because many stimuli don"t look the same. Can categorize based on similarities to one another: not resembling but having similar features (as a real family: categorisation can be based on how similar an object is to a standard category, prototypical approach: Comparing to the typical representation of the category.
