Attention: process of concentrating on specific features of the environment or on certain thoughts or activiites . Selective attention-attending to one thing while ignoring others: cocktail party effect: ability to focus on one stimulus while filtering out other stimuli. Distraction- one stimulus interfering with the processing of another stimulus. Divided attention paying attention to multiple things at a time. Attention capture- the rapid/sudden shifting of attention when caused by something unusual stimulus (often loud noise eg, if we hear a loud bang, we"re likely to jump) Visual scanning-movement of eyes from one location to another. Attention is not just one thing, it is multiple things. Dichotic listening: listening to 2 different sets of stimuli simultaneously in right and left ear. M oray found that people in a crowded loud room also noticed change in gender and change in tone. Gray & wedderburn dear aunt jane experiment: subjects told to shadow the attended ear.
