Patterns of disease and death in the 21st century. Most diseases were infectious and of a short duration in the 19th century. Tuberculosis, pneumonia and influenza were 3 leading causes of death. By the end the century, death was caused by poor lifestyle habits. Chronic diseases have been the leading cause of death in the most recent years including cancer and heart disease. A complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Illnesses are caused by biochemical imbalances and/or neurophysiological abnormalities. Mechanistic-treats the body as a machine such as fixing the body. Disease is localized in anatomy (16th to 18th century). Specific tissues could become diseased while others remain healthy (late 1800"s). Life resides in cells, so cells must be the place to look for disease (19th century). There are particles in the air that cannot be seen (e. g bacteria) and that can cause disease.
