Psyc 3170 lectures 5 and 6 (placebo effect) Placebos often used in clinical practice (reported by 45% surveyed) to calm the patient and supplement another treatment, has significant effect (above and beyond what would be seen over time) Often used in a research study, can allow double blind research (both participant and investigator don"t know what"s being administered) Most effective = 3 groups: one with nothing, one with placebo, one with actual meds (need first group because placebo has such a strong effect) Placebo = stimulant after their bp and hr increase and rxn sped improved. Same pill half an hour later calmed down hr, bp, felt sleepy. The body actually shows an effect, not a fake rxn. Linked to relationship between clinician and patient expectations have an effect on what they are experiencing. If they didn"t believe in treatment then there would be no effect. Provider behavior how the administer acts (their confidence, how they talk to the client)
