a. Mind-body relationship - deterministic
i. Contrary to Dualism, Spinoza proposed Double
Aspectism
ii. For Spinoza, there is only one basic reality (God) and it
was both material and conscious:
iii. Mind and body were two aspects of the same thing the
living human being.
a. Humans are seen as a material object from which
consciousness (mind) can’t be separated. (Double
Aspectism)
iv. ***Spinoza viewed the Mind and the body as inseparable
anything happening to the body is experienced as
emotions and thoughts; and emotions and thoughts
influence the body.
b. We really do not have free will.
v. Nature (God) is lawful and humans are part of nature.
God did not judge human behavior but vice and
wickedness are punished by God because they are at
variance with our nature and lead to despair.
vi. Thus thoughts and behavior are lawful determined.
