Information in the environment: functions of motion perception, studying motion perception, neural firing to motion across the retina, eye movements, biological motion, apparent motion. Information about objects: prey will hold still if they want to avoid being detected, there are also ambiguous objects in the world that would be misinterpreted if you or the object didn"t move. When do we perceive motion: real motion - an object is physically moving. Illusory motion: apparent movement - stationary stimuli are presented in slightly different locations, basis of movement in movies and tv-sequence of still images. Apparent motion of a coloured afterimage: this illusion builds on apparent motion (phi) phenomena and negative afterimages (colour specific afterimages). It looks as though there is a differently coloured dot going around the circle, but it is in reality a gap. Image of environment moves across retina but environment is perceived as stationary.
