Perception is the conscious experience resulting from stimulation of the senses. Perceptual process: stimuli light is reflected and focused receptor processes neural processes perception/recognition action. Sensation - simple, elementary processes that occur right at the sensory receptors. Perception - complex processes that involve higher-order mechanisms such as interpretation and memory that involve activity in the brain. Sensation - elementary processing of the properties of the stimulus. Perception - higher order interpretation of events and objects. Distal stimulus: the stimuli out there in the environment. Principle of transformation: stimuli and responses created by stimuli are transformed between the distal stimulus and the perception. Principle of representation: everything perceived is based not on the direct contact with stimuli but on the representation of stimuli formed on the receptors and the resulting activity in the nervous system. Distal stimulus transformed into proximal stimulus and proximal represents the distal (principle of representation and principle of transformation)
