Document Summary
Thresholds can vary for many reasons that are not related to your sensitivity. The probematic factor of thesholds is criterion (tendency to say yes or no) Sensitivity (d prime: measure of one"s ability to detect a given stimulus (signal), usually at a low intensity. Criterion: meaurement of a person"s tendency to say yes and no (opposite of d prime, c = [z(ph) + z(pfa)] / -2, negative values mean they say yes (lax), positive mean they say no (strict) Isosensitivity curves: people can have the same senisitivity with different criterions (yes or no, as one travels up the isosensitivity curve, the criterion drops, payoff matrix. If the cost of a false alarm, or reward for a correct rejection, is great, one will tend to make one"s criterion stricter (more no ) If the cost of a miss, or reward for a hit, is raised, one will tend to make one"s criterion laxer (more yes )
