PSYC 2220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Low Frequency, Hearing Loss, Tuning Fork
Document Summary
Theories of pitch discrimination: there are two theories: place theory and telephone theory. The hair cell is in the cochlear in the membrane. The sound enters at a certain hz and it sends action potential signal up to the brain. The farther it progress tuned, it reaches the lowest hz for human is 20 hz. To figure out how high or low the pitch it, it determines where along the membrane the action potential is coming from. Hair will vibrate at a particular place: nonresonance traveling wave. Peak of the wave and the crest of the wave depend: telephone theory counts the frequency. It matches the frequency and volley, although there is a problem since neuron has a limit of firing signal. It can be done to live human beings. The scientist figures out the threshold by seeing the sensitivity of the person"s ear to the tone.
