PSYC 2130 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Erik Erikson, Oedipus Complex, Karen Horney
Document Summary
Decreased emphasis on importance of sexual instinct. Horney: oedipal complex in terms of intrapersonal factors-sociocultural factors. Typical conflict is b/n dependency and hostile impulses (hatred) that are felt for the parents. Hostility can be aroused in many different ways in children. Core tendency of personality: striving for superiority. Current behaviour is directed by future goals- they are not tangible. Motivation is the striving towards the fulfillment. Innate (wired in) capacity for good will and sense of community. First to look at personality development vs birth order. Similarities with freud"s theory: stages (must move on otherwise you"ll be stuck), conflicts and drives. Differences: motivated by social drives not sexual (ie. psychosocial theory), personality extends through lifespan. This model doesn"t necessarily work for people who like to be on their own as they cannot move through the stages without the social aspect of being in a relationship. Psychological challenge in adolescence: asserting independence from parents.
