Depends on the therapist: but overall, studies show that different therapists have comparable results (read ch 16 application section carefully) ii)common therapeutic ingredients. Rationale for one"s problems: differences in therapeutic orientations. All approaches differ on: assumptions regarding the origins of the problem, therapist"s stance the way they work, and how they work, method of treatment, goals of treatment what the therapist wants you to achieve. Problem: resides in unconscious conflicts, repressed memories. Method: free-association (say what comes to mind); dream analysis, transference analysis(how do you feel about your therapist; how is he judging you ) Goal: to make the unconscious -> conscious, behaviour therapy. Problem: resides in faulty learning you have learned to behave inappropriately (for example) or learned to avoid certain situations because it was rewarding. Therapist: examines current conditions that elicit the problem. A)systematic desensitization: effective w/ phobias, use counter-conditioning , steps: Set up a hierarchy of anxiety-inducing situations. Imagine least anxiety-provoking situation while maintaining a relaxed state.
