Functionalism: based on the notion that psychology should investigate the function and purpose of consciousness instead of what it"s made of: popularized by william james, james adopted ideas from darwin"s evolutionary theory about selection that stated the characteristics of each animal serves a purpose, james argued that consciousness consists of a continuous flow of though and that he wanted to study the stream of consciousness, interested in how people behave to the world around them, fostered behaviorism and applied psychology.
