Document Summary
We may distinguish consciousness between two general broad topics. The alter states of consciousness (sleep, hypnosis, meditation, alcohol + drug influences) A sort of an examination of consciousness: feeling a stimulus and then describing how that stimulus affected oneself. Professor mccan says that consciousness is our normal waking state: william james (1890) purposed that is not a thing but a process. It has a past, a present, and a future. In talking of it thereafter, let us call it the stream of thought, of consciousness, of subjective life . It is a flowing stream of information: consciousness is a non-repeating stream of event and experience. It is hard to get a grasp on. Passive: passive process evolutionary instincts that unconsciously detect our environment, novel stimulus noticing something unusual with the environment. Focusing very hard on something, but a loud sound captures your attention: orienting response adapting to help us in the environment. Active: it is more a voluntary response.
