Argues that there is an autonomic arousal and a cognitive interpretation of that arousal. Becker"s finding regarding marijuana use and various psychological situations (ex. traumatic reactions, depression, organic illnesses such as manic depression) Looked at archival data, the number of people who were hospitalized because of marijuana psychosis. He found that more and more people used marijuana as the decades progressed (his study occured from 1900 to 1960)
