Document Summary

Unit 2, october 18th lecture 4, sensation and perception. In between what you see is a sensory organ, the brain, your experiences, and much more. Psychophysics: fechner, develop original methods - stimuli (physics) to perception (psyche, limits of awareness focus. Xed amount from trial to trial, or decreased by a xed amount: weber"s law: jnd = constant ratio of standard to comparison stimulus. A jnd is = amount of change in comparison stimulus / standard. = how much change is needed to recognize a change, gives the sensitivity of sense. Signal detection theory: implies that the observed jnd, is not an absolute quantity, but will depend on situation and motivational as well as perceptual factors setting a stimulus depends on: stimulus intensity and psychological factors. Stimulus > sense organ > transduction: its the same process for all sense, the difference is the kind of stimulation that you get, and the nature of the transduction.
