Introduction to personality & psychodynamic theories (module 46) Perspectives on psychology (one is not superior to another: neuroscience, evolutionary, behaviour genetics, psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive, social-cultural, biopsychosocial approach, psychoanalytic perspective (specifically freud, psychodynamic perspective (derived from psychoanalytic approach) Two types: life instincts (e. g. , libido, death instincts (lead to aggressive and destructive acts to ourselves and others) The id is like the little devil on your left shoulder, and the superego is like the angel on your right shoulder, with the ego in the middle. Unconscious = mental events more or less unavailable to consciousness. Preconscious= mental events can become conscious through attention. According to freud"s theory, personality developed through a series of stages throughout childhood. In order to obtain a healthy personality later on in adulthood all of these stages need to be completed successfully. If issues are not resolved in a stage then fixation will occur resulting in an unhealthy personality.
